Abortion on the ballot: the state measures since the fall of Roe
Active · last development Oct 13, 2026: “Vote 'yes' on Missouri Amendment 3 and 'no' on Amendment 6”
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, voters in several states have decided abortion rights directly. Kansas voted in August 2022 to keep abortion protections in its constitution,[1] and in November 2024 abortion-rights measures passed in four states and cleared the way to overturn Missouri's ban, while Florida's failed.[2] In 2026 abortion is on the ballot in four more states, including a Missouri measure to repeal its 2024 amendment.[3][4]
What this arc covers
The state ballot measures on abortion rights since the fall of Roe v. Wade: Kansas's August 2022 vote and the push it set off in other states, the fights to qualify them in Nevada, South Dakota, Arkansas, Nebraska, Missouri and elsewhere, the court rulings on their wording and signatures, Florida's campaign, in which the amendment failed and the six-week ban stayed, the November 2024 results, the court fight over Missouri's abortion restrictions after its amendment passed and lawmakers' push to repeal it, and the measures on the 2026 ballot.

Background
The Kansas result encouraged abortion-rights groups to seek votes in other states.[1] In Florida, a coalition gathered enough signatures by January 2024 to put an amendment on the ballot,[5] and the state's attorney general asked the Florida Supreme Court to keep it off.[6] Republican legislators in Missouri and Mississippi moved to keep abortion off their ballots,[7] a Missouri appeals court threw out a Republican-written summary of the measures there,[8] and a judge blocked a New York amendment due to go before voters.[9]

Measures in Nevada, South Dakota and Missouri qualified for the November 2024 ballot after court fights,[10][11][12] Arkansas's did not,[13] and Nebraska's high court let competing measures appear.[14] In Florida, state police questioned voters about signing the petition,[15] and a judge stopped the state from threatening television stations over an abortion-rights ad.[16] In November, abortion-rights advocates won in four states and cleared the way to overturn Missouri's ban, while Florida became the first state to reject an abortion-rights amendment since Roe was overturned, leaving its six-week ban in place.[2][17]
In Missouri, a judge blocked state restrictions so that abortions could resume in February 2025,[18] the state Supreme Court effectively banned them again in May,[19] and a judge again blocked many of the state's anti-abortion laws in July.[20] Republican lawmakers moved to repeal the amendment,[21] and in 2026 Missourians will vote on doing so, while Idaho voters will decide whether to roll back that state's ban.[4][3][22]
