The fall of Roe v. Wade: the Dobbs ruling and the state abortion bans that followed
Gone quiet · last story Aug 13, 2022
The Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to abortion on June 24, 2022, when it overturned Roe v. Wade, and states with laws written for that moment banned most abortions within days.[1][2]

What this arc covers
The end of the constitutional right to abortion and the state bans around it: the court fight over Texas's six-week ban, which the Supreme Court declined to speed up, Idaho's 2022 law modeled on it, Florida's 15-week ban, the leaked draft opinion in May 2022, the Supreme Court's June 24, 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade, the trigger laws that banned most abortions in several states within days or weeks, the state court fights over the bans that followed, the clinics that closed, and the reactions, including President Biden's.

Background
Before the ruling, Texas's ban on abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy had already cut access in the state, and in January 2022 the Supreme Court refused to speed up the clinics' challenge to it over the dissents of its three liberal justices.[3] In March the Texas Supreme Court ruled that state medical licensing officials could not enforce the law, which effectively ended that federal challenge.[4] Idaho became the first state to copy the Texas law, signed by Gov. Brad Little despite his doubts about its constitutionality,[5] and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a ban on most abortions after 15 weeks.[6] Coverage on this site begins in January 2022, so the Texas law's passage in 2021 appears here only where later stories describe it.

The ruling set off trigger laws. Missouri banned abortion minutes after the decision under a 2019 law,[2] North Dakota's ban was set to begin on July 28,[7] and Idaho's 2020 law banning abortion except in reported cases of rape or incest or to protect the mother's life was set to take effect 30 days later.[8] In Wisconsin, doctors stopped providing abortions while it was unclear whether a 173-year-old ban could be enforced.[9] President Biden spoke after the ruling,[10] and Democratic leaders moved to protect abortion rights in the states where they could.[11]
Court fights followed in the states. A Texas judge briefly blocked a nearly century-old ban before the Texas Supreme Court let it be enforced,[12][13] Planned Parenthood sued over the trigger bans in Utah and Idaho,[14] and in August the Idaho Supreme Court let that state's bans take effect while the challenges went on.[15] The Texas Medical Association said some hospitals had refused to treat patients with serious pregnancy complications for fear of breaking the state's ban,[16] and at least 43 clinics closed in the month after the ruling, according to the Guttmacher Institute.[17]
