Background

Forecasters warned in the week of September 21, 2026 that a strengthening nor'easter could bring flooding and damaging winds to the East Coast.[4][5] On September 25, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced states of emergency, Hochul's covering Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City and Westchester.[2] Events were canceled across the region, including the Oceans Calling festival in Ocean City, Maryland,[6] and the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, its first cancellation in 14 years.[7]

The storm stalled over the weekend of September 26 and 27. New Jersey's state climatologist said no storm in more than 30 years had produced as many flooding cycles above three feet there, and waves swamped cars as far north as Kennebunk, Maine.[1] In Brooklyn, Leighton Brown, a 56-year-old maintenance supervisor for the city's housing authority, was killed by a falling tree,[8] and more than 100,000 homes lost power.[3] On Nantucket, waves uncovered what appeared to be part of a schooner that ran aground in 1884,[9] and in Highlands, New Jersey, a couple whose home flooded moved their wedding to a gym.[10][11] The stories here describe the storm's effects as it happened; they do not include a final tally of the damage.
