Background

The 2026 Nobel Prizes opened with the medicine prize, announced at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on October 5.[5] It went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel "for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics," which uses light and genetics to control individual cells;[1] Deisseroth, a Stanford professor, surprised his children with the news.[6] On October 6, Francis Halzen, a Belgian-American physicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, won the physics prize for his work on neutrinos, tiny cosmic particles that may offer clues to how the universe evolved,[2] and said years of October "misery" were finally over.[7] On October 7, Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai won the chemistry prize for resolving how molecules exist in non-identical mirror images.[3]

Before the Peace Prize announcement, experts floated the International Space Station as a contender,[8] Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney drew buzz for his stand against President Donald Trump,[9] and experts saw Trump's own chances as minimal.[4]
