The death of a Russian plague-lab worker and fears of an outbreak

Active · last development Oct 7: “A dead scientist, quarantines, and a plague lab: Here we go again?”

The death of a young woman who worked at a plague research institute in Siberia in early October 2026 raised fears of a pneumonic plague outbreak in Russia, though Russian authorities said they found no evidence that her illness came from the pathogens she worked with.[1] The World Health Organization and the Trump administration both struggled to get answers from Russia.[1][2]

Background

An employee of a plague research institute in Siberia contracted pneumonia of an "unknown" cause and died, local state TV said, and Russian authorities quarantined a hospital and monitored her contacts.[1] Unconfirmed media reports suggested she might have died of pneumonic plague, which is nearly always fatal without treatment, and some 200 people were placed under medical observation.[1][3] Russian authorities sought to allay global worries,[1] while the World Health Organization said it had asked Russia for more information and was still waiting.[1] The Trump administration formally escalated its own request,[2] and the State Department warned Americans in Russia that it had "limited ability to help."[4] Plague still occurs in the US, where between zero and 17 human cases were reported each year from 2000 to 2023, according to the CDC.[5]
