Today in history: Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin
On September 28, scientist Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. The discovery happened when Fleming noticed that a mold had contaminated one of his bacterial cultures and had killed the surrounding bacteria. This accidental finding led to the development of the first widely used antibiotic, which would go on to treat bacterial infections and save countless lives.
