Super-sized El Niño could cause more than 450,000 heat deaths by February, study suggests
A research group called the Climate Impact Lab released a study predicting that heat related to an El Niño weather pattern could cause around 450,000 deaths worldwide between mid-2026 and early 2027. The forecast suggests this would represent a significant increase compared to typical heat deaths during that period. California is expected to see about 1,000 of these deaths.
