Survey: Credit isn't a backup plan. For millions of Americans, it's how they buy groceries.
Sixty-six percent of Americans carrying at least $10,000 in unsecured debt used a credit card to buy groceries in the last year, more than any other essential expense, according to a new survey. Credit cards were once reserved for expensive purchases or for added security in buying online.
