Gunmen attacked the Crocus City concert hall outside Moscow in March 2024, killing more than 100 people in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. President Vladimir Putin said the attackers tried to escape to Ukraine, which Kyiv denied, and the attack dented his image as a protector less than a week after his reelection.
