State prosecutors argue Luigi Mangione’s ‘different crimes’ mean double jeopardy doesn’t apply to him
Luigi Mangione is accused of fatally shooting the CEO of United Healthcare. He has already pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges. State prosecutors now argue he should also face a separate state murder trial, saying the murder charge is distinct enough from the federal stalking charge that trying him twice would not violate double jeopardy protections, which generally prevent someone from being tried twice for the same crime.
