Iran's leaders vowed in April 2024 to retaliate for an airstrike widely attributed to Israel that destroyed Iran's consulate in Damascus and killed seven members of the Revolutionary Guard, including two top generals. Guard commander Hossein Salami said "no threat will go unanswered."
