Background
Bend police responded to a report of an active shooter at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, October 15, 2026, and directed families to a nearby church to be reunited with their children.[1] Authorities said a 16-year-old shot his way through locked doors to get into the school and killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher, and wounded two others.[1] A person at the scene pursued him inside and shot him dead.[1] Local and state officials briefed the community that evening.[3]
The community held a vigil at Drake Park that night,[4][5] and thousands gathered to mourn; Oregon's governor told them, "On behalf of everyone who lives in Oregon, I am so sorry for what you are experiencing today."[2] Rep. Janelle Bynum, an Oregon Democrat, said, "They're killing our babies. Shredding our kids with lead."[6] Oregon's political leaders sent words of solace,[7] the county health department, the local hospital system and the school district held free crisis support sessions the next day,[8] and Bend-area high school games were canceled.[9]
