Background

The roofs of two classrooms at the Al-Khair School, a small private school in Peshawar, collapsed on Thursday, October 15, 2026, while classes were under way.[1] Early reports of the death toll varied widely as rescuers searched the rubble for trapped children, from at least 17 schoolchildren and a teacher to a teacher and 27 pupils.[1] Officials later put the toll at 34 children and a teacher, with more than 50 others injured, some critically, and authorities and a hospital official called it the deadliest building collapse in the country's history.[1]

The next day, Pakistani authorities ordered inspections of all private schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Some victims' relatives said the structure had previously been reported to be weak, and at least one said he had warned of the risk.[2] The figures in this arc come from Pakistani officials and hospital staff in the first days after the collapse.
