Background

The death prompted other parks to close coasters built by the same manufacturer,[4] and records showed hundreds of reports of injuries and malfunctions on Six Flags' aging rides in the years before.[5] Critics called for federal oversight, since no single federal agency enforces safety standards for such rides.[6] Six Flags' chief executive announced new safety measures and a review of all its parks.[7][8]

Weeks earlier Six Flags had retired the X2 coaster at Magic Mountain amid lawsuits over riders' brain injuries, covered in the arc on the X2 roller coaster.
