Background

Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Gaza on August 5, killing a senior militant among others, and said it was targeting Islamic Jihad over an imminent threat after the arrest of a senior member of the group.[1] Two days later it said it had killed a second senior commander in a crowded refugee camp,[2] as militants fired rockets that reached deep into Israel and the death toll in Gaza rose.[4] Israel said a ceasefire would take effect at 11:30 p.m. local time on August 7, after a similar announcement from Islamic Jihad,[3] and by August 11 the Palestinian death toll had risen to 48, after an 11-year-old girl and a man died of their wounds.[5]
