The fight over redrawing congressional maps before the 2026 midterms: Texas's redraw at Trump's urging to gain five Republican seats, the Democratic legislators' walkout, the federal ruling that blocked the map as likely racially biased and the Supreme Court decision letting Texas use it; California's answer, Gov. Gavin Newsom's Proposition 50, which voters approved in November 2025 and the Supreme Court allowed; and Virginia Democrats' 2026 referendum on a new map, which voters approved before the Virginia Supreme Court struck it down and the US Supreme Court declined to restore it.
