The 2024 presidential primaries, from the first campaign launches to Haley's exit

Gone quiet · last story Jul 9, 2024

Donald Trump won the 2024 Republican presidential nomination less than two months after the first votes were cast. He won the Iowa caucuses in January by a wide margin,[1] his last major rival, Nikki Haley, quit the day after Super Tuesday in March,[2] and within a week he and President Joe Biden had both clinched their parties' nominations, setting up a rematch of 2020.[3]

What this arc covers

The 2024 presidential nominating contests. On the Republican side: the early jockeying after the 2022 midterms, when Donald Trump warned Ron DeSantis against running, the 2023 campaign launches of Nikki Haley and DeSantis, their duels with Trump in Iowa and New Hampshire, the debates, polls and endorsements before the Iowa caucuses and Will Hurd's exit, then the Iowa caucuses Donald Trump won, the exits of Chris Christie, Asa Hutchinson and Ron DeSantis, Trump's wins in New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Michigan and on Super Tuesday, Nikki Haley's challenge, her wins in Washington, D.C., and Vermont, her exit in March, and her later vote for Trump and release of her delegates. On the Democratic side: Joe Biden's wins, Dean Phillips's challenge, and the 'uncommitted' protest votes.

Background

Coverage on this site begins in October 2023, so the Republican campaign's earlier months, including its first debates, appear here only where later stories describe them. In late November 2023, the political arm of the network tied to the billionaire Charles Koch endorsed former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who was battling Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for second place behind former President Donald Trump.[4] Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a fierce Trump critic, ended his bid days before the Iowa caucuses.[5]

Trump won the Iowa caucuses on January 15, 2024, with DeSantis edging Haley for second.[1] Vivek Ramaswamy, who finished fourth, dropped out that night and endorsed Trump.[6] DeSantis, whose campaign and allies had spent more than $100 million, ended his bid and endorsed Trump on the eve of the New Hampshire primary,[7] which Trump won over Haley.[8]

In Nevada, where Trump skipped the primary to compete in separate caucuses, Haley lost the primary to the ballot option "none of these candidates."[9] Trump beat her easily in her home state of South Carolina,[10] and he and Biden both won Michigan's primaries, though the results gave each cause for concern about the swing state.[11] There, about 100,000 Democratic voters chose "uncommitted" to protest Biden's support for Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, and hundreds of thousands more did the same on Super Tuesday.[12] Haley won her first contest, the District of Columbia's Republican primary, at the start of March.[13]

On Super Tuesday, March 5, Biden and Trump dominated contests across 16 states and a territory.[14] Haley, who won only Vermont, suspended her campaign the next day,[2] and Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who had challenged Biden, ended his.[15] Biden and Trump both clinched their nominations on March 12.[3] In May, Haley said she would vote for Trump, though she stopped short of a formal endorsement.[16] The general election that followed is covered in separate arcs.
