Pope Leo XIV's lung cancer and surgery
Active · last development Oct 15: “Trump ripped for reaction to Pope Leo cancer diagnosis: ‘Incapable of giving a s—t’”
Pope Leo XIV, 71, had surgery at Rome's Gemelli hospital on October 13, 2026, to remove a mass from his lung that doctors found to be cancerous.[1] Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung to try to ensure that all of the cancer was gone,[2] and his recovery went so normally that the Vatican stopped its morning updates on his condition, even as questions continued about what the cancer means for his young pontificate.[1]

What this arc covers
Pope Leo XIV's lung cancer, diagnosed in October 2026: the surgery at Rome's Gemelli hospital to remove a cancerous mass from his lung, his doctors' reports on his recovery, his first message after the surgery and the Vatican's plans for his return, the questions about the future of his pontificate and about what he knew when he prayed at Lourdes in September, the reactions, including President Donald Trump's, and the news that his older brother, Louis Prevost, also has cancer.

Background
Pope Leo XIV said in October 2026 that doctors had detected a nodule on his lung "at a very early stage," and he revealed his plans for surgery over the weekend before it.[3][4] On Tuesday, October 13, he walked into Rome's Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic through the main entrance, waving to well-wishers, and a team led by the hospital's chief thoracic surgeon removed the nodule that afternoon.[1] Doctors determined that the mass was cancerous.[1] He had the lower section, or lobe, of his right lung removed to try to ensure that all of the cancer was removed.[2]

His doctors said he was eating regularly, had begun walking and doing breathing exercises, and that his post-operative tests were normal.[1] His audiences were canceled through October 20, though he remained in charge of the papacy,[5] and he asked for prayers in his first pontifical message since announcing the surgery, issued for a meeting marking the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis's text "Amoris Laetitia."[4] On October 16 the Vatican stopped its morning updates confirming that he had woken up and had breakfast, and it weighed whether he could appear for the Sunday prayer.[1]
The diagnosis raised questions about the future of his pontificate, though Vatican watchers said it could also push him to accelerate his own agenda.[6] There were strong suggestions that he knew something before his September trip to France, where he prayed at the shrine in Lourdes and performed the "three gestures" of a pilgrim seeking a cure, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.[6]
His older brother, Louis Prevost, who lives in Florida, has multiple myeloma, his wife told CBS News.[7] President Donald Trump offered the pope his "best wishes" and "love" the day after the diagnosis and said Prevost was a friend and a supporter of his,[8] and critics faulted Trump for moving quickly on to other matters after wishing the pope well.[9] This arc follows the pope's illness from the announcement of his surgery onward.
