Background

Hayden Panettiere, who began acting as a child, played a superpowered cheerleader on "Heroes" and a country singer on "Nashville."[4] She was found unresponsive at an apartment complex in Greenville on August 16, 2026.[2] Police said there were no signs of foul play,[5] and the coroner's office said she had been found in cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated.[6] In a memoir published that May, she had written about postpartum depression and alcoholism after the birth of her daughter in 2014.[7]

Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother were at the apartment, according to a police report.[8] Her mother, Lesley Vogel, said the family had tried to get Hickerson out of her life and later claimed he had pawned some of her belongings.[9][10] Hickerson's lawyer said the death remained under investigation and that police had found no signs of foul play.[11] The DEA joined the inquiry,[12] which by September was examining whether she had obtained illicit drugs from a dealer in Southern California, according to the Los Angeles Times; her representative disputed a report that she died from a fentanyl-laced pill.[13]

On September 22, the coroner ruled her death an accident, finding no signs of trauma and an overdose of several drugs including fentanyl; a report said she had been to drug rehab in Malibu weeks earlier.[3] Her "Heroes" co-stars gathered to remember her,[14] and Neutrogena acknowledged making its former ambassador "feel unsupported during a very difficult time."[6] Her former fiancé, the boxer Wladimir Klitschko, who has raised their daughter, Kaya, in Ukraine since 2018,[15] asked a California court to let him protect the 11-year-old's inheritance.[16]
