High school students across France have protested since late September 2026 over under-resourced schools, and as the protests spread and at times turned violent, nearly 5,000 people were arrested.[1][2] After a 15-year-old lost his hand to a police stun grenade, France suspended police use of the grenades against protesters on October 7.[3][4]

Background

Protests by French high school students against under-resourced schools, long hours and other complaints spread nationwide in late September 2026, with arson and other violence on the margins of some of them. The prime minister convened a crisis meeting, and he and the far-right leader Marine Le Pen blamed a far-left party for stoking the violence.[1] Nearly 5,000 people were arrested as the protests spread, and tens of thousands marched in support of the students.[2]

In early October, a 15-year-old lost his hand after picking up a police stun grenade,[3] and police fired tear gas as more than a quarter of a million people rallied nationwide for more school funding, according to government figures.[5] President Donald Trump blamed the protests on Islam and "out of control mass migration."[6] The protests also laid bare France's growing financial pressures as it tries to rein in its budget deficit.[7] On October 7, France suspended police use of stun grenades against protesters, and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu prepared to address the nation.[4]
