Federal scrutiny of Hasan Piker, from an airport detention to the Cuba inquiry

Gone quiet · last story Aug 1, 2026

Hasan Piker, a left-wing streamer, has drawn the attention of US authorities twice in two years: border officers questioned him at an airport in May 2025,[1] and in 2026 he and CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin were subpoenaed in a federal investigation of their aid convoy trips to Cuba.[2] A State Department report later listed Piker among what it called "front groups and fellow travelers" of the Cuban government.[3]

Background

In May 2025 Piker said US Customs and Border Protection officers had detained and questioned him at O'Hare airport after a flight from Paris.[1] He said the questions concerned Hamas and his views on Donald Trump, and added: "It's very obvious they knew exactly who I was."[1]

In May 2026 the Treasury Department subpoenaed Piker and Benjamin as part of a probe into whether US activists violated Cuba sanctions laws. The two had taken part in aid convoy trips to Cuba earlier that year.[2]

By early July, federal authorities had arrested a Cuban national, Carlos Antonio Lloga Dominguez, who was accused of assisting the activists, and the Trump administration planned to deport him after the State Department revoked his immigration status.[4] The Daily Wire reported that he had entered the United States as a tourist and overstayed his visa by nearly a year.[4]

Later in July the State Department published a report titled "Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism" that singled out Piker, and that also named Zohran Mamdani.[3] City Journal described a State Department inquiry as part of a broader crackdown on Cuban influence.[3]
