Brazil's 2026 presidential election: Lula vs. Flávio Bolsonaro

Active · last development Oct 4, 2026: “How a Bolsonaro Biopic Ended Up at the Center of Brazil’s Presidential Election”

On October 4, 2026, Brazilians voted in the first round of a presidential election that pitted President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, who was seeking a fourth term, against Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.[1][2] Polls showed the two neck and neck.[3] The campaign was shadowed by a dispute with the Trump administration, which revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador to the United States after Brazil denied visas to two US officials who planned to scrutinize its electoral system,[4][5] and by a Supreme Court investigation into Flávio Bolsonaro's ties to a disgraced banker.[6]

Background

Lula announced in October 2025, during a trip to Asia, that he would run for a fourth term in 2026, brushing aside concerns about his age.[2] In July 2026, at an event formally nominating Flávio Bolsonaro, Argentina's President Javier Milei called Lula a "convict" and a "thief," and Brazil recalled its ambassador to Argentina.[7] The senator's Liberal Party confirmed him as its candidate at a national convention after a chaotic week marked by fresh legal trouble,[8] and the Workers' Party formally endorsed Lula in August.[9]

Brazil denied visas to two senior State Department officials whom the Trump administration planned to send to scrutinize the fairness and integrity of the electoral system before the vote. The State Department called "baseless" the Brazilian claim that the delegation aimed to shape the election.[5] In August, the administration revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador to the United States in retaliation, and a senior State Department official said it would be reinstated immediately if Brazil granted diplomatic approval for Trump's nominee for US ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Perez.[4] Lula sought to cast the race as a fight against submission to foreign interests,[9] and Brazil took steps to shield the vote from potential US meddling.[10] Two days before the election, the United States suspended consular services at its embassy and consulates across Brazil, citing unspecified security concerns.[11]

The campaigns opened in mid-August, with both candidates courting women voters.[12] The top electoral court set new standards for AI-generated deepfakes in political advertising in a case involving Flávio Bolsonaro.[13] A weeklong fight among Supreme Court justices became a campaign issue and renewed scrutiny of Flávio Bolsonaro's ties to an executive at the center of a banking fraud.[14] He came under a Supreme Court investigation for allegedly receiving $12 million from a disgraced banker to finance a film about his father, and said he had "nothing to hide."[6] Lula signed an order banning fixed-odds betting, calling the industry a "cancer."[15] Three days before the vote, TV Globo canceled the final presidential debate, citing judicial interference.[16]
